Sorry to intrude here but the quote you give does not reflect an Ayn Rand opinion or belief. She put the quote into the mouth of one of her most hated villains Ellsworth Touhy as an expression of an opinion that a progressive would hold, not one that she held as an expression of her philosophy. She had Touhy make the statement to reflect an opinion with which she disagreed. Ayn Rand's view is more likely something to the effect that a man's mind is the most wonderful quality that he holds. To her the intellectual, the true intellectual who is a person of both intellect and action, is the highest form of human possible. Your acceptance of a statement made by Rand with which she does not agree means that you hold an opinion uttered by a fictional character that she considers to be one of the most evil and destructive types possible.

yes you are correct, infact i agree with many things that Mr Toohey says in the Fountainhead :D
see, there was a time when i was a complete fan of Rand but slowly i grew out of it, its not that i disagree with Rand completely but i believe there are more important things that matter than what Rand has said

You don't outgrow a thinker as profound as Ayn Rand...you disintegrate.

i think its better that we grow up than saying than idolizing a person
this is best form of integrity :D

I grew up when I realized Rand was right. I've been growing for 45 years. I don't consider that I'm a child having raised 3 children (successfully), succeeded in the business world, written about 6 books, ran my own business and made it to retirement. So how is it I haven't grown up? I find it ludicrous for someone to say that they grew up and realized Ayn Rand was wrong when what usually happens is they stop questioning, start acting blindly, and consider that growing up. I've seen it many times. Precisely, what premise of Rand's is childish and what grown up idea did you replace it with?

hmm...see i am not making a personal comment...but i know many people who dont know rand but who managed to do much better things..there are many things behind success you know...and about growing up, even you know that there are many successful businessmen who just arent grown up!
okay..to be specific, i believe that a person should have abilities that Toohey has, he is very good when it comes to managing people..and its a necessory thing...i dont believe that there is such thing as individualist heroic..we live in a practical world after all...
another thing is...most of the rands heroes are 'intellectuals' and people with 'ability', she doesnt suggest much about average person

Toohey ruined a newspaper in the novel...not very practical, I think. In the real world, leftist intellectuals are ruining the USA...not very practical. It is "heroic" businessmen who are creating abundance and production and it is leftist politicians who are taking that production and giving it to people who cannot produce...not very practical. I've always thought that the heroes of the world were the most practical, not the leftists who want to demand sacrifice of all others except themselves. And the idea that Rand's ideas do not work for the "average" person, well, that isn't true. I was born in a house without running water or electricity and I was successful in life. Of course, some people have succeeded more than I, but what good does it do a representative of the "average" person like yourself to denigrate what I have accomplished just to make a meaningless point? As for not making "personal" comments your suggestion that people have to grow up so they can get past Ayn Rand's ideas is an insult to Ayn Rand, to me and to any average person who finds inspiration in her ideas. And, yes, there are many average people in her novels...some of them started from very meager circumstances, especially John Galt. Now what insult will you through out next?

cmon..first of all..i dont agree that leftism is bad...its due to capitalistic propaganda that you feel its bad...but it aint..
i continued this discussion from academic interest point of view..and i respect views of others and expect others to respect mine..everyone can have their point of view aint it?
and now i really think we will ever agree...so whats the point in continuing discussion? :D

There is no point. You started on a wrong premise and you continue with it. I'm through. Anyone who thinks the left is good has been reading only leftist propaganda and there is plenty of that. There is no capitalist propaganda (as in lies) that I know of so if it exists I haven't read it. I read history for truth and economics to inform myself. I can tell the difference between propaganda and truth. If you really want the truth on capitalism read, "Economics in One Lesson" by Hazlitt. It is decidedly not propaganda but proves that capitalism is the superior system. No socialist system can survive without looting a capitalist system and as a socialist system takes more and more power, it impoverishes the nation and destroys the basis of capitalism which is capital accumulation. This has happened so many times in history that no amount of "propaganda" can deny it. Socialism fails because it destroys capital accumulation and free trade. These are facts of history. This is my last communication.
